In 2010 Ada citizens approved a five year penny sales tax extension to raise money to improve the Main Street corridor from Latta / Asa on the west end to the previous improvements to East Central University Campus on the East end. The development strategy of the master plan for the corridor is to improve visual aesthetics, consolidate the “sense of place”, provide a stronger connection from the downtown to the University, and create gateways at the limits of downtown and the ends of the corridor. The master plan creates cohesiveness of the corridor using similar wayfinding signage, gateway signs, street furniture, lighting, landscape, and paving materials. The master plan incorporates locations for artwork pedestals, an important feature requested by the community. Providing safer access for pedestrian and bicyclists through the corridor from the university, on-street bike lanes, share the road signage, striping, and new traffic lighting was implemented as part of the design. Two existing pocket parks were revitalized and provide a connection more usable to the downtown streetscape.
